9/19/23 Congratulations to the team of Drs. Jen-Mei Chang (PI), Fangyuan Tian, Gino Galvez, Andrea Balbas, and Alex Klotz who received the NSF S-STEM grant for $2.5M to support CSULB undergraduate students in the STEM fields. This six-year project is entitled "Mentored Excellence Toward Research and Industry Careers 2 (METRIC 2)". We will start our recruitment in December. Stay tuned!
8/13-8/17/23 Several members from our lab attended and presented at the ACS conference in San Francisco! Raymond joined us for the conference! Ethan gave an oral presentation on his project of MIL-88B; Tristan and Ian co-presented a poster on the ZIF-8 project; Hakob from Dr. Joe Kalman's gave an oral presentation on our collaborative project of TiO2. Ethan received this year's ACS COLL-PUI Student Award! Congratulations!!!
7/22/23 Our lab participated in the 2023 Sharks @ The Beach Outreach Event! Thanks to Dorsa, Tiffany, and Ian who volunteered at the event. We did demonstrations of lava lamp, ferrofluid, pH testing, and MOF crystals under microscope. Over 1800 people show up to the event. It was covered by the local press. 5/10/22 Our UCSD-CSULB DDI proposal got funded by the UC Chancellor's Office! This five-year project - "Partnership in expanding diversity of faculty in materials science" aims to promote collaborations between the two campuses and help minority students to enter PhD programs in materials science. Thanks to Drs. Michael Sailor and Andrea Tao for leading this proposal! Tian together with Drs. Shon, Slowinska, and Tapavicza will lead the effort at CSULB. Look forward to the collaboration!

Our lab contributed two activities: pH testing on household items and looking for Mr. Spiky (magnetic nanoparticles). Undergraduate students (Ben and George) and graduate student (Kristi) were on hand help to guide kids through activities and answer their questions.

05/22/2017 Hadiah Fattal received the 2017 American Institute of Chemists (AIC) Undergraduate Award in Chemistry. This national award is given to only one senior in all the chemistry majors who are graduating this year at CSULB. Nick Pavlakovich received the Kenneth L. Marsi Scholarship of 2017 for his outstanding record of academic and research accomplishments. Congratulations Hadiah and Nick!
05/22/2017 Several lab members have been accepted into different competitive research programs: Michael Chin, the joint student with Dr. Mezyk's lab, has been selected for the MARC U*STAR program. Now he is one of the ten MARC scholars at CSULB. Angela Bui has been selected for the RISE Lower Division Program. Johana Aviles has been accepted into the BUILD Associates Program. Congratulations, everyone!

04/17/2017 Tian received the HOGAR project 2017-18 Faculty Mentoring Grant with Dr. Kasha Slowinska as her mentor. Tian also received the internal 2017 CNSM SFG grant. The funds will be used to support the silicon modification project.
